The anxiety does not always make sense. It shows up in the middle of an ordinary day, with nothing obviously wrong. But the anxiety keeps coming back, sometimes stronger, and you are starting to wonder if something else is going on.

Anxiety is often treated as a problem to think your way out of. Reframe the thought, challenge the worry, practise gratitude. For a lot of women, that advice only goes so far, because the anxiety is not only happening in the mind. It is happening in a nervous system that has learned, at a physiological level, to stay on alert.

What is driving anxiety that will not settle

The nervous system underlies every system in the body, including the immune system, the gut, and the production and breakdown of histamine. When the nervous system reads chronic threat, several things happen at once:

  • Cortisol and stress hormones stay elevated, keeping the body on alert even when nothing is happening right now
  • Histamine, the same chemical involved in allergic reactions, is also a neurotransmitter that drives wakefulness and alertness, so a nervous system stuck in threat can keep histamine, and anxiety, running high
  • Gut permeability increases, letting more inflammatory signals reach the bloodstream and, in turn, the brain
  • The threshold for what counts as a threat keeps dropping, so smaller things trigger the same racing, tight chested response

Research in psychoneuroimmunology has consistently shown that the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the brain's stress response system, directly influences immune function, gut integrity, and mast cell behaviour. A 2019 review in Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience confirmed that chronic stress dysregulation is associated with increased mast cell activation and reduced intestinal barrier function. A nervous system stuck in chronic stress does not treat every hormone equally. Reproductive and thyroid hormones are often the first to be deprioritised, so oestrogen, progesterone and thyroid hormone output can all shift, with knock-on effects on mood, cycles and energy.

The enzyme that breaks down dietary histamine is dampened by the stress response, and gut permeability increases at the same time. More histamine, food particles and inflammatory bacterial fragments cross into the bloodstream, triggering the immune system. Gut motility slows, the valves in the gut malfunction, and SIBO, reflux, constipation, IBS or bloating can occur.

What a different approach to anxiety looks like

Nervous system regulation for anxiety is not about positive thinking. The patterns that drive a chronic threat response are held in subcortical brain structures, not in conscious thought. Why both sides of the industry are missing half the picture

There are two camps when it comes to treating anxiety that will not shift, and Luanne sits across both.

The therapy and medication side treats the mind, working with thoughts and neurotransmitter levels. This work matters, and for some people it is enough. But it rarely looks at what is happening in the gut and immune system, the physiological load that keeps the nervous system primed for threat in the first place.

The general wellness advice says manage your stress better, breathe, meditate, get more sleep. When people try that alone and nothing shifts, they often conclude something is wrong with them, because the deeper pattern keeping the nervous system stuck in protection mode has not been addressed.

Frequently asked questions about anxiety and the nervous system

Is my anxiety physical or is it psychological?

Both, and that is not a contradiction. Anxiety involves real physiological changes, elevated cortisol, altered histamine levels, increased gut permeability, and a heightened immune threshold, alongside the thoughts and feelings you notice. Treating anxiety as only psychological misses half of what is actually happening in the body.

How is this different from therapy or medication?

Therapy and medication typically work with the conscious mind or adjust neurotransmitter levels. Nervous system regulation works at the subcortical level where chronic threat patterns are actually stored. I have tried CBT and breathing exercises and they have not worked. Why?

Most standard anxiety tools work from the top down, brain to body, addressing the conscious mind but not the deeper subconscious patterns that keep the nervous system in threat response. They also tend to miss the bottom-up layer, body to brain. Can anxiety really be connected to histamine intolerance or MCAS?

Yes. Histamine is a neurotransmitter as well as an allergy chemical, and it plays a role in wakefulness and the stress response. A nervous system stuck in chronic threat can drive histamine production up, and elevated histamine can, in turn, feed anxious symptoms. For women with both anxiety and histamine intolerance or MCAS, this is often the same underlying nervous system pattern showing up in more than one way, not two unrelated problems.

Do I need to stop therapy or medication to do nervous system work?

No. Nervous system regulation is designed to work alongside therapy, medication, and any other support you already have in place. It is an additional layer, not a replacement, focused on the physiological patterns those approaches often do not reach.

How long does it take to notice a change?

There is no fixed timeline, and pace differs from woman to woman. What it depends on is how long the pattern has been running, how dysregulated the nervous system has become, and how consistently the nervous system work is paired with the nutritional and gut foundation.
