Nervous system coaching uses a framework informed by polyvagal theory, trauma research and neuroscience, working with complex, overlapping conditions such as chronic pain, fatigue, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, MCAS, POTS, EDS, MCS, gut disorders, histamine intolerance and food sensitivities. We work with the nervous system to regulate and calm an over-alert survival system, so it can rebuild flexibility, safety and stamina.
Sessions work with patterns, breath, movement and attention, grounded in polyvagal theory, brain retraining, NLP, central sensitisation and gut-brain research, aiming to reduce symptom amplification, improve heart-rate variability and vagal tone, and support a more flexible stress response, without pushing you into the kind of overexertion that triggers a flare. I draw on an extensive toolkit, and if a particular approach doesn't sit right with you, we leave it and use something else instead. For deeper work on a single, specific pattern, such as a food fear or a health anxiety loop, MAP Coaching sits alongside as an option.
A program gives you the plan, teaches you the tools and hands you essential information, but a program cannot help when you are stuck, when something is not working, or when you are struggling with the basics. Nervous system coaching gives you direct support and guidance, so you can tailor what you have learned to your specific situation, work out how to address the obstacles in front of you, and build a plan to move forward.
"Whatever program you've done, you can't do it all by yourself all the time," says Luanne Hopkinson, Clinical Nutritionist & Neuroplasticity Coach. "I'm here to support you through the parts of mind body healing that don't show up neatly inside a program structure, so your progress keeps building instead of stalling out between sessions."

Nervous system coaching sessions with me are most suited to people who:
Nervous system coaching sessions don't include detailed nutrition plans, lab reviews, gut testing or supplement guidance. To get support with that alongside the nervous system work, a gut microbiome restoration package or the Happy Without Histamine Method brings everything together under one plan.
Nervous system coaching works underneath your diet and any treatment protocols you choose to follow. Your nervous system has its own understanding of what's safe, and because the nervous system and the immune system share the same alarm circuitry, that can link directly to your symptoms. Skin and other tissues carry their own local version of the stress axis, and the same stress chemicals that flood the brain under pressure act directly on mast cells, priming them to react more readily the next time. (Aitella et al, International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2025.) A nervous system stuck in protection mode keeps mast cells primed, trigger happy, and the histamine threshold low, no matter how hard you try to heal with supplements, diet or positive thinking.
Central sensitisation is a major driver of symptom amplification: pain, fatigue and reactivity to food, chemicals or activity get turned up by the nervous system itself, even when scans and bloods come back clean. (Woolf, Pain, 2011.) It's also why the gut shows up so often: mast cells sit close to the nerves lining the gut wall, and when they're activated they sensitise those nerves directly, one of the mechanisms behind the visceral hypersensitivity so common in IBS. (Lee & Lee, Gastroenterology Research and Practice, 2016.) That pattern is not confined to the gut. Mast cells cluster close to nerve endings throughout the body, in skin and airways as much as gut, forming what researchers call a neuroimmune unit, so nervous system activation and mast cell activation are rarely far apart. (Theoharides, Twahir & Kempuraj, Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, 2024.) The vagus nerve runs through both the polyvagal picture and the fibromyalgia and chronic pain picture: low vagal tone, measured through heart-rate variability, shows up consistently in these conditions, which is part of why vagal-toning work is a direct, not incidental, part of nervous system coaching. (Martins et al, Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews, 2021.)
Trauma and chronic stress keep this circuitry activated well after the threat has passed, driving pain and gut symptoms through the vagus nerve's regulation of immune and digestive function. (Kolacz & Porges, Frontiers in Medicine, 2018.) That's the layer nervous system coaching works on. Not the food on the plate. The state of the body reading the plate.
Here are six of the nervous system mechanisms behind that amplification, and the research behind each one. Tap a driver to go deeper.

Happy Without Histamine · nutrition + neuroscience
Regulating a nervous system that has spent years in protection mode is closer to learning to drive than it is to flicking a switch. Nobody expects to sit one lesson and merge onto a freeway alone. You need someone in the passenger seat often enough, naming what just happened in your body when the truck cut you off, correcting the small things, until the new response starts happening on its own.
Nervous system coaching with me works the same way. Each session meets whatever is live for you that week: a food fear before a trip, the aftermath of a hard specialist appointment, a pattern that seems to be keeping you stuck. I help you see what's getting in your way, and give you new approaches to help you get back on track. We work it through together, in real time. There's no testing and no supplements in these sessions, it's mind body work only, alongside whatever else you already have in place.
I'm Luanne Hopkinson, Clinical Nutritionist and Neuroplasticity Coach, based in Melbourne, Australia. Every session runs online, so nervous system coaching with me isn't limited to clients based here. I bring the same histamine and MCAS specific clinical thinking to coaching sessions that I bring everywhere else in my practice.
Sessions run for 30, 45 or 60 minutes, by video call, with no testing and no supplement review at any point, nervous system coaching is mind body work only. Your first session with me always runs 60 minutes, so there's room to properly understand what's going on before we start the work itself.
After that initial consult, you book follow-up sessions in whatever length suits, one at a time or as a pack. A shorter follow-up is usually enough for one specific pattern or a check in. A longer one gives more room when there's more than one thing to work through.
Nervous system healing timeframes are different for everyone, and I won't pretend otherwise. What I do see, in my own clients, is that a few sessions worked through together tend to get you further than one on its own. If you're starting fresh, I usually recommend the initial consult followed by a pack of three follow-ups rather than booking one at a time, so there's room to work through more than one pattern.
That lines up with the wider research: a 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis found health and wellness coaching produced a meaningful improvement in quality of life within three months across people managing chronic illness. (Boehmer et al., Patient Education and Counseling, 2023.)
"The women who keep a follow-up session on the calendar, even an occasional one, tend to hold their progress through the wobbly weeks far better than the women trying to white knuckle it alone," says Luanne Hopkinson, Clinical Nutritionist & Neuroplasticity Coach. "That's why after the initial consult, I usually recommend a pack of follow-ups rather than booking one at a time, there's more room to build on what we find."

The standard advice for a dysregulated nervous system is usually some version of manage your stress, in general terms, with no structure attached. That advice isn't wrong, reducing stress genuinely helps, but it rarely says how, and it gives you nothing to do with the flare that's happening right now, today, this week. Nervous system coaching with me gives you the how: each session works with the issues that matter most for you, in real time, with someone who has been there and understands the histamine and MCAS picture underneath it, rather than a generic tip sheet.
We focus on creating safety inside your body and nervous system, so your capacity for stress can grow and you don't have to keep seeing yourself as having a "sensitive" nervous system or body. I help you create a plan of attack for introducing foods, activities or dealing with challenges in a way that works with your current window of tolerance whilst also stretching that window gently so you can get back to doing the things you love.
Nervous system coaching works best for women already doing some of the work, whether that's a program, a diet or their own research, who want an ongoing place to bring what's live for them rather than a fixed protocol. If what you actually need is gut testing or a nutrition assessment, a gut microbiome restoration package is the better starting point.
Nervous system coaching is ongoing one to one mind body support, while MAP Coaching is a specific subconscious process aimed at one identified pattern, a food fear, a specific memory, a health anxiety loop, updated at the neural level in a single guided session. Nervous system coaching is more flexible: each session meets whatever is live for you that week, without needing to name one pattern in advance. Many clients use both, MAP for the patterns that need a deeper process, coaching for the support in between.
Yes. Histamine intolerance and MCAS are where most of my clients start, but the same nervous system work applies to POTS, hypermobile EDS, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia and multiple chemical sensitivity, because they tend to share the same underlying pattern of a sensitised nervous system. Dysautonomia in particular is well documented in hypermobile EDS and POTS, where the autonomic nervous system struggles to regulate heart rate, blood pressure and temperature. (Mathias et al, American Journal of Medical Genetics Part C, 2021.) If your main diagnosis isn't histamine or MCAS, nervous system coaching is still likely to be useful, and we'll talk through what's specific to your body in the session itself.
Your first session with me always runs 60 minutes, as an initial consult, and costs $257 AUD or $237 USD. After that, single follow-up sessions run 30, 45 or 60 minutes, from $155 AUD (or $145 USD) up to $257 AUD (or $237 USD), and a pack of three follow-ups includes a small saving, for example three 45 minute follow-ups are $599 AUD or $557 USD as a pack. Clients in Australia and New Zealand are billed in AUD, everyone else in USD. Exact current prices are confirmed at checkout.
Sessions run for 30, 45 or 60 minutes, though your very first session with me always runs 60 minutes as an initial consult. After that, the right length for a follow-up depends on what you're bringing to it. A 30 minute follow-up usually suits a quick check in or one specific pattern. A 45 or 60 minute follow-up gives more room when there's more than one thing going on, or when you want to go deeper into something. If you're not sure, a 45 minute follow-up is a reasonable middle ground, and you can always book a different length next time.
No. Nervous system coaching sessions are available whether you're in BrainFood, MAP Coaching, another nervous system program, or supporting yourself on your own. Some clients add sessions onto a program they're already in, others use coaching as their only one to one support.
Yes. I'm familiar with most of the nervous system programs out there, and they're generally built on the same underlying neuroscience. If I notice a gap in whatever program you're already using, or if you're not using one at all, I can teach you the specific tools to fill it in our one to one sessions.
No. Nervous system coaching is coaching, not therapy or a clinical mental health treatment, and it's designed to sit alongside whatever medical and psychological care you're already receiving. If you're on medication or under active treatment, keep following your prescribing provider's guidance. For clinical mental health support, a registered psychologist or psychiatrist is the appropriate referral.
That depends on what you're using the sessions for, and timeframes vary from person to person. Your first session is always the 60 minute initial consult. After that, one follow-up can be enough for a specific week or event, but if you're starting fresh, I usually recommend the initial consult followed by a pack of three follow-ups rather than booking one at a time. A few sessions worked through together tend to get you further than one on its own, and some clients keep a follow-up on the calendar every few weeks afterwards as ongoing care.
We start with what's live for you right now, a food fear, a flare, the aftermath of a hard appointment, a pattern that hasn't fully settled, and work through it together using nervous system and mind body coaching tools. There's no testing, no supplement review and no fixed script, and I bring the same histamine and MCAS specific clinical thinking I use across my practice to whatever you bring.
Nervous system coaching sessions are mind body work only. They don't include lab or gut test reviews, nutrition plans, supplement recommendations or gut microbiome restoration work. For those layers alongside the nervous system work, a gut microbiome restoration package brings everything together under one plan.
Yes. All nervous system coaching sessions are conducted online by video call. I work with clients across Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada, with more limited appointment times available for the United Kingdom and Europe due to time zone differences. Sessions are priced in AUD for clients in Australia and New Zealand, and USD for clients elsewhere.
