MAP Coaching

MAP Coaching for histamine intolerance and MCAS

There is a layer underneath the food reactions, the gut symptoms, and the fatigue that most approaches to histamine intolerance and MCAS never reach. It is the layer where the nervous system learned to stay in protection mode. Where the body developed a pattern of treating its own environment as a threat. Where the immune system began responding to signals it was never meant to respond to.

MAP Coaching works at exactly that layer.

MAP stands for Make Anything Possible. It is a subconscious coaching method developed by Colette Streicher in 2013, drawing on the Process Healing work of Dr Garry Flint, combined with principles from coaching, mindfulness, and hypnotherapy. Over 50,000 sessions have been delivered worldwide since 2014 by more than 350 certified practitioners. I'm Luanne Hopkinson, a MAP-CP certified practitioner, based in Melbourne, Australia, and one of a small number of MAP practitioners who specialises in the intersection of MAP Coaching with histamine intolerance and MCAS.

Why MAP Coaching is relevant to histamine intolerance and MCAS

The immune dysregulation that drives histamine intolerance and MCAS is not simply a physical problem with a purely physical solution. The nervous system regulates immune function. (Tracey, Nature, 2002.) When the nervous system has learned to maintain a chronic threat state, whether through early adverse experiences, prolonged illness, medical trauma, or sustained stress, the immune system receives that signal and responds accordingly: mast cells stay primed, DAO enzyme activity is suppressed, gut permeability increases, and the threshold for immune reactivity drops.

Diet, supplements, and gut repair can reduce the symptom load. But they cannot change the nervous system's baseline threat state. That requires working at the level where the threat state is held: the subconscious.

Memory reconsolidation is the neuroscience discovery that a memory becomes temporarily unstable each time it is activated, opening a window in which it can be updated before it is stored again, rather than simply left as it was. Neuroscientist Karim Nader's research first demonstrated this reconsolidation window in 2000, overturning the long-standing assumption that emotional memories, once formed, could only be managed or suppressed, never actually changed. MAP Coaching works directly within that window: as a pattern becomes active during a session, the process updates the emotional charge attached to it at the neural level, without requiring the person to consciously recall or talk through the original experience.

(Nader et al., 2000; Ecker et al., Unlocking the Emotional Brain, 2012; Ecker & Bridges, Clinical Social Work Journal, 2020.) This is why MAP can produce changes in patterns that conscious approaches, including talk therapy, positive thinking, and standard CBT, often cannot reach.

"In my experience of working with my clients, the ones who use MAP and the other nervous system regulation tools I teach alongside diet and gut work get a much better result than the clients who are solely focused on the diet and supplements," says Luanne Hopkinson, Clinical Nutritionist & MAP-CP Coach.

What MAP Coaching addresses

In the context of histamine intolerance and MCAS, MAP Coaching is most effective for the following patterns:

  • Food fear and hypervigilance around eating: the anxiety before meals, the constant monitoring for reactions, the restriction spiral that narrows the diet even further
  • Nervous system threat patterns: the body's learned association between food, symptoms, environments, or situations and danger, which maintains the immune system on high alert
  • Medical trauma: experiences of not being believed, misdiagnosis, or frightening reactions that have left the nervous system primed to anticipate threat in medical and health contexts
  • Childhood and developmental patterns: early experiences that established a baseline of nervous system activation before the histamine symptoms even began
  • Health anxiety and symptom hypervigilance: the monitoring, checking, and scanning for symptoms that reinforces the nervous system's sense that the body is unsafe
  • The isolation of chronic illness: the loneliness of living with a condition most people don't understand, missing out on shared meals and social occasions, and the anxiety of feeling left out or having to explain yourself again
  • Beliefs about recovery: subconscious beliefs that recovery is not possible, that the body cannot be trusted, or that food and the environment are permanently threatening

MAP does not require the person to know the origin of a pattern, to remember a specific event, or to talk through difficult experiences in detail. The process works with the subconscious directly, which means it can reach patterns that predate conscious memory or that have never been identified as connected to the current symptoms.

What happens in a MAP Coaching session with me

MAP sessions with me run for 75 to 90 minutes via video call. The structure is different from most forms of coaching or therapy you may have experienced.

At the start of the session

I'll spend a few minutes understanding what you want to work on in that session. This might be a specific food fear, a pattern of reactivity around stress, an experience that has been affecting you, or a recurring emotional response that you sense is connected to your symptoms. You do not need to come with a clear agenda: often the most useful starting point is simply describing what is present right now.

During the session

Using the MAP process, I guide you into a light, focused state, similar to meditation, where the subconscious is more accessible. From there, we locate the neural patterns and memories maintaining the current protective response, and update them. You do not need to actively recall or vividly re-experience anything. The process is designed to be gentle, and many clients describe it as deeply calming rather than difficult.

After the session

Changes from MAP Coaching often continue to unfold over the days and weeks after a session, as the nervous system integrates what was initiated. I recommend rest and gentle activities in the 24 hours following a session, and in my experience, most clients notice changes in their reactivity, their anxiety around food, or their general sense of safety as that integration continues.

Booking and what's included

Individual MAP Coaching sessions with me are sold as single sessions, not as a package, so you book one at a time as you need them. Once you've booked, you'll be sent a short video to watch before your first session, which walks you through what to expect. If you'd like to talk it through before committing to a session, you can book a chronic condition strategy call instead.

MAP Coaching in my clinical practice

I integrate MAP into my work with histamine intolerance and MCAS in two ways. For women inside the Happy Without Histamine Method, group MAP Rapid Rewire coaching sessions are included as part of the program to support nervous system regulation and emotional healing. For women who want to start with MAP Rapid Rewire directly, it is available inside BrainFood and BrainFood Plus.

MAP Rapid Rewire is the guided version of MAP available inside BrainFood, as self-paced recordings you work through in your own time. BrainFood Plus goes further, with live group MAP Rapid Rewire sessions and a library large enough to do a new session every week for around two years. For women who want individual attention, private MAP Coaching sessions with me go deeper, are personalised to the specific patterns present in your case, and allow for real-time guidance and adjustment that MAP Rapid Rewire cannot provide.

Luanne Hopkinson, clinical nutritionist and MAP-CP coach

"MAP Coaching is the piece that got me across the line in my own recovery," says Luanne Hopkinson, Clinical Nutritionist & MAP-CP Coach. "I had done everything: the diet, the supplements, the gut protocols, the brain retraining. And I kept hitting a ceiling. MAP was what broke through it. It went to the subconscious patterns that were maintaining my nervous system in protection mode, and it changed them. Within weeks of starting MAP sessions, my food tolerance started expanding in a way it hadn't in years of dietary management. The nervous system had finally received a different signal."

Psychological stress is shown to activate mast cells and increase their reactivity, consistent with the change I describe above as my nervous system settled. (Theoharides, Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 2020.)

What clients say about MAP Coaching with me

"I'd been suffering intense flushing and hives on my face and body for two and a half years. Hormones and other supplements helped for a while, but the flushing kept coming back, and the low histamine diet was the only thing that helped, which is so limiting. The flushing is now completely gone, handled by nervous system retuning and MAP Rapid Rewire, and Jess helped me clean up my gut for long term health. The two prong approach of working with the gut and the mind is what makes this program unique. I'm so grateful I found Luanne and Jess and Happy Without Histamine. It has made a huge impact on my health and happiness."

- Nikki Chapman, HWH Method

Symptom score 78 → 13 (83% reduction) | Flush free 5 months

"I cannot express how shocked I am at the changes I'm witnessing in my emotional and physical health in such a short time. Doing the MAP sessions daily has really calmed my nervous system down significantly and quickly. There's definitely some magic in the MAP protocol! I had become completely discouraged that I would ever be well again after five years of intense POTS symptoms. The amount of hope I have is just unspeakable. I'm floored that I finally found an answer, and I feel certain that I'm finally on track to healing."

- Coty Savage, HWH Method | POTS

"Before I started I had a huge fear of foods. Digestion and food issues controlled my thoughts. I was scared of symptoms, skin and inflammation flare-ups. Unsure what I could and couldn't eat to recover from SIBO, and new to MCAS, I was not sure what to do. Now I am more confident and much more relaxed about food. I have less rashes and laryngitis, fewer reactions comparatively. Getting back an enjoyment in food! I am now aware of brain patterns in general and the role the nervous system plays in my condition. I now know that stress and the brain play a big part in MCAS. The MAP sessions are really helpful."

- A.D., HWH Method | MCAS, SIBO, food fear

Who MAP Coaching with me is for

MAP Coaching sessions with me are most suited to:

  • Women with histamine intolerance or MCAS who have tried dietary and gut-based approaches without achieving lasting results
  • Women who recognise that stress, anxiety, or emotional intensity directly drive their reactions
  • Women with significant food fear, hypervigilance, or health anxiety that is maintaining their immune reactivity
  • Women with a history of trauma, chronic stress, or adverse early experiences, even if the connection to current symptoms has not been made
  • Women currently in the Happy Without Histamine Method who want additional MAP sessions outside the program
  • Women who have tried other brain retraining approaches and plateaued, and are looking for the subconscious layer that those approaches did not reach

MAP Coaching sessions with me do not include nutritional assessment, supplement recommendations, or lab test reviews. For those layers, the Happy Without Histamine Method, which integrates group MAP Rapid Rewire sessions alongside clinical nutrition support, is the appropriate pathway.

Frequently asked questions about MAP Coaching

What does MAP stand for?

MAP stands for Make Anything Possible. It is a subconscious coaching method developed by Colette Streicher in 2013, drawing on the Process Healing work of Dr Garry Flint. Practitioners certified in the method carry the MAP-CP credential.

What is MAP Coaching and how is it different from therapy?

MAP (Make Anything Possible) Coaching is a subconscious coaching method developed by Colette Streicher in 2013, drawing on the Process Healing work of Dr Garry Flint. Unlike therapy, MAP does not require you to talk through your history in detail, identify the origin of a problem, or consciously process difficult experiences. I work with your subconscious directly. You're guided to get fully relaxed, then we locate and update the neural patterns maintaining the current protective response. MAP is coaching, not therapy, and is not a clinical mental health treatment. For clinical mental health support, a registered psychologist or psychiatrist is the appropriate referral.

How many MAP sessions will I need?

In my experience, most clients notice meaningful changes within two to four sessions for a specific pattern. Some clients find that one or two sessions create the change they were looking for. Others choose to continue over several months to work through multiple layers. The number of sessions depends on the complexity and duration of the patterns being addressed, and I discuss this with each client individually after the first session.

Is MAP Coaching evidence-based?

MAP Coaching is built on the neuroscience of memory reconsolidation, the process by which the brain can update stored emotional memories at the neural level. Memory reconsolidation has been extensively documented in peer-reviewed neuroscience research (Ecker et al., 2012; Nader et al., 2000). The specific application of memory reconsolidation principles to coaching and the MAP framework is the work of Colette Streicher and the MAP Coaching Institute. The MAP-CP credential is a professional certification requiring specific training and supervised practice hours, which I hold.

Can MAP Coaching help with MCAS if I don't have a trauma history?

Yes. MAP works with any subconscious protective pattern, not only those arising from what would clinically be defined as trauma. Food fear, health anxiety, prolonged illness, the stress of managing a chronic condition, medical experiences that felt frightening or invalidating: these all create subconscious nervous system patterns that MAP can address, regardless of whether they meet the clinical threshold for trauma. The question MAP asks is not "did something bad happen to you?" but "what is your nervous system currently treating as a threat?"

Do I need to talk about my trauma for MAP Coaching to work?

No, and this matters enough that I want to say it plainly. Your nervous system does not need a full account of what happened, a clear memory of when a pattern started, or any conscious understanding of its origin before it can change. What matters is that the pattern is present, even faintly, while we're working together, and that your system has the chance to experience something different in that moment. I bring the pattern into focus while you're in a light, guided state, so you're never asked to narrate your history or walk back through it in detail. Part of this work also happens simply through the relationship itself: showing up consistently, staying attuned, and building a sense of safety over time. None of this has to be intense to work. If your nervous system is already carrying a lot, gentler is usually more effective, not less.

Is MAP meditation?

No, MAP is not meditation, even though the guided state I bring you into can look similar from the outside. You're free to stand up, walk around, or change position at any point during a session. Sometimes the body signals that it needs to shift, move, or stretch, and when that happens, we simply follow it rather than staying still. The process adapts to what your body needs in the moment, rather than asking you to hold a fixed position throughout.

Do I need to prepare anything before my first MAP session?

Not much. You don't need to bring a clear agenda, a written history, or a specific issue mapped out in advance. The most useful starting point is simply describing what feels present for you right now, whether that's a food fear, a stress pattern, or something less defined. Once you've booked, you'll be sent a short video to watch before your first session, which walks you through what to expect.

Can I do MAP Coaching alongside my psychologist, medication, or other practitioners?

Yes. MAP Coaching is coaching, not a replacement for medical or psychological treatment, and it's designed to sit alongside whatever other care you're receiving. Most clients continue seeing their psychologist, psychiatrist, GP, or other practitioners as normal while doing MAP sessions with me. If you're on medication or under active treatment, keep following your prescribing provider's guidance, and it's worth letting them know you're also doing MAP Coaching.

What is the difference between MAP Rapid Rewire in BrainFood and individual MAP Coaching sessions?

BrainFood contains MAP Rapid Rewire, a guided audio recording that introduces the MAP process in a self-directed format, with two full sessions to try. BrainFood Plus goes further, with live group MAP Rapid Rewire sessions and a library large enough to do a new session every week for around two years. All MAP Rapid Rewire sessions inside BrainFood Plus focus on the main topics, emotions, situations, and blocks specific to chronic conditions, including but not limited to MCAS, food intolerances, IBS/SIBO, POTS, EDS, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, MCS, dizziness, autoimmune conditions, anxiety, and much more. Sessions focused on creating your new life and identity are also held in BrainFood Plus. Individual MAP Coaching sessions with me are personalised to your specific patterns, allow for real-time guidance and adjustment, can go deeper into complex or layered material, and provide direct clinical context specific to histamine intolerance and MCAS. Many clients find that MAP Rapid Rewire is a valuable foundation that makes the individual sessions more productive.

Is MAP Coaching available to people outside Australia?

Yes. All MAP Coaching sessions with me are conducted online via video call. I work with clients across Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, and internationally.

Do I need to be doing the low histamine diet while doing MAP Coaching?

No. MAP Coaching is effective no matter what diet you're doing. However, I do find that MAP Coaching is best complemented by the additional nervous system regulation practices inside BrainFood, such as brain retraining, somatic and nervous system state-changing tools, and emotional inquiry work like EFT. For complex health situations, gut microbiome restoration alongside MAP Coaching is often effective in helping to achieve symptom relief more efficiently. Women who want the full integrated approach, dietary management, gut repair, and MAP Coaching together with clinical supervision, will find that in the Happy Without Histamine Method.
